JoLynne brought home a letter from school telling us that she was invited to the school awards night to receive an award. Pleasant surprise for the end of school! I planned to attend and Todd asked for the night off from BWW. Then a few days before the awards night, Aspen brings home the same note telling us that she is also receiving an award. I was excited to see what they were being recognized for and we found out that night that each teacher in the school can pick one student that year to receive an academic award from their classes. The school called us to ask what would be the best way to handle Aspen going across the stage to receive her award, it was decide that Jolynne would go with her and then she would receive her award right after Aspen. They went in alphabetical order so it worked out great! Each student getting an award walked across the stage and stood center stage as the principal read a little paragraph that each teacher had written about the student they had picked. I was really impressed with how they did this and thought it was a really great idea.
Aspen did not want to even go up the steps toward the stage, but with some encouraging words from her sister and some big pushes she made it. Lynne walked with her to get her award, which was from her Life Skills teacher Bailey Graham. Life Skills is the name of the class Aspen attends and it is meant to be just that, teaching these kids not only their own academic level curriculum, but skills to help them succeed in their everyday life. I need to ask Bailey if I can have a copy of what she said about Aspen, but I do know it had everything to do about her bringing happiness to everyone and doing her best to help and make others happy. I can't remember, I was crying and so proud of her. She stood up there smiling out at everyone, she receive a loud applause!
Next Lynne received her award, which was from her French II teacher, Leilani Camden who also happens to be her Seminary teacher. Funny that Lynne received the French award last year at her middle school in Yorktown. I think she might want to look into using her French in the future. Sad though, there are not enough students signing up to take French so they got rid of the classes. Lynn will be taking French III online next year. Good thing she has Sister Camden close by. Leilani talked about Lynne being the youngest in the class but carrying the highest grade and that she is a fantastic student with an awesome attitude. I really need to ask her if she has a copy of her statement about JoLynne. I am so proud of Lynne for being a good student and excelling in all her classes, especially the honors courses, but I am most proud of her for helping her sister and being there for her. Anytime Lynne sees Aspen in school she gives her a hug and says hi, and when an ignorant boy in her P.E. class said Aspen "that fat girl over there?" wasn't her sister, Lynne stood up for her and told him a little bit about her and that kids like that don't choose to be that way. Ignorance SUCKS!! Go Lynnie!!
We took them for ice cream after and it was a great time to celebrate the wonderful girls that they are. Enjoy the pictures!!
